About the island
The most easterly island in the Caribbean.
Barbados sits at the Atlantic edge of the Caribbean chain, which gives it something no other island in the region quite has: reliable trade winds, calm westerly waters, and a climate that sits almost entirely outside the Central Atlantic hurricane belt. It is a place of quietly assured confidence.
The island is 34 kilometres long and just 23 kilometres at its widest, yet it contains extraordinary variety — the dramatic Atlantic coast to the east with its rolling surf and rugged cliffs, and the placid, turquoise Caribbean coast to the west where the best beaches and most of the private villas sit. Between them, Scotland District in the north and the undulating plantation country of the interior provide another landscape entirely.
Barbados has been shaped by a long and complex history — over three centuries of British colonial rule have left their mark in the island’s parliament (the third oldest in the world), its parish churches, its plantation great houses, and a culture that blends West African and British influences into something distinctly Bajan. In November 2021, Barbados became a republic, removing the British monarch as head of state — a moment of quiet historic confidence.
“Barbados rewards those who pay attention — to the quality of a sunset rum punch, the particular shade of the sea at midday, the effortless warmth of Bajan hospitality.”

When to go
Barbados enjoys reliably warm weather throughout the year. The dry season runs from December through May — clear skies, lower humidity, and the peak of the social season. The wetter months from June to November bring the occasional shower but temperatures remain warm, prices are lower, and the island is quieter. Barbados’s position outside the main hurricane track means tropical storms are an extremely rare event.

Getting there
Grantley Adams International Airport in Christ Church handles all international arrivals. It is one of the best-connected airports in the Eastern Caribbean, with direct flights from the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, and Europe. Private aviation clients are served by the IAM Jet Centre — one of the finest purpose-built FBOs in the wider Caribbean.
Private aviation
A purpose-built five-star FBO providing a private, stress-free arrival experience. Onsite immigration and customs, luxurious lounges, meeting spaces, and ground transport coordination. British Airways First Class passengers depart via the centre daily for London.
Scheduled airlines
Barbados is exceptionally well served for a Caribbean island, with multiple direct flights daily from the UK and regular services from the US, Canada and Germany.
On island
All Simply Islands villas include or can arrange airport transfers. Hiring a car is straightforward and recommended for exploring — driving is on the left. Most guests on the west coast find they rarely need to leave their immediate area during a stay.
Inter-island
LIAT and Caribbean Airlines serve the wider Eastern Caribbean. Private charter to St. Lucia, Grenada, the Grenadines, and other nearby islands can be arranged through our concierge team.
Things to do
Barbados rewards a particular kind of guest — one who enjoys the best of things without needing to be constantly active. The west coast has an effortless quality to it: a morning on the beach, lunch at a beach restaurant, an afternoon at sea, and a long, unhurried dinner. But the island also has genuine depth for those who want to explore it.
Barbados has five exceptional courses and a climate that allows year-round play. Sandy Lane’s Green Monkey — designed by Tom Fazio and carved from a former coral quarry — is one of the most dramatic and exclusive courses in the Caribbean. Royal Westmoreland, Rockley, Barbados Golf Club and Apes Hill round out a serious golfing destination.
The west coast calm makes for ideal sailing waters. Catamaran charters offer snorkelling with hawksbill sea turtles, swimming stops at secluded coves, and sundowner sails that are genuinely spectacular. Our concierge team can arrange private charters for groups of any size.
The west coast’s calm, clear water provides visibility of 20 metres or more. The Stavronikita — a Greek freighter deliberately sunk in 1978 — is a celebrated wreck dive in around 40 metres of water off Holetown. Coral reefs run the length of the coast for snorkellers.
The Barbados Polo Club at Holders Hill hosts chukkas throughout the high season and several prestigious tournaments, including the Sandy Lane Gold Cup. Watching polo on a Barbados Saturday afternoon — gin in hand, sun declining — is a quintessential west coast experience.
Barbados is widely credited as the birthplace of rum. Mount Gay — founded in 1703 and the world’s oldest rum brand — runs excellent tours. The Foursquare Rum Distillery, run by the Seale family, is producing some of the finest aged rums in the world and is essential for anyone serious about the spirit.
The Barbados restaurant scene far exceeds expectations for an island this size. The Cliff, The Tides, Lone Star and L’Acajou lead west coast fine dining, with Sea Shed the upmarket-casual pick. For something more local, a Friday fish fry at Oistins is unmissable.
Bridgetown’s UNESCO-listed historic garrison and parliament buildings, the Barbados Museum, Gun Hill Signal Station, and the extraordinary Flower Forest and Andromeda Botanic Gardens in the Scotland District offer a genuine counterpoint to beach days.
The Atlantic-facing south and east coasts receive consistent swells year-round. The Soup Bowl at Bathsheba on the east coast is a world-class right-hand reef break and has hosted numerous international surfing events. The south coast has more accessible breaks for beginners and intermediates.
Every villa on our Barbados collection has been visited and assessed by our team. Most are on or close to the west coast, between Holetown and Speightstown — the area that consistently delivers the best combination of beaches, restaurants, and privacy.
