About the island
A quietly transformed Grenadine island.
Canouan sits in the middle of the Grenadines, fifteen miles south of Bequia and the same distance north of Union Island. Three miles long, two wide, and home to fewer than two thousand permanent residents. For most of the twentieth century it was a quiet farming and fishing island; over the past two decades it has been comprehensively reshaped into one of the most discreet upper-end destinations in the Caribbean.
The transformation has been carefully managed. The Sandy Lane Yacht Club estate covers roughly half the island, with its own marina at Glossy Bay, an eighteen-hole Jim Fazio-designed golf course on the windward ridges, and a small number of villas. The Mandarin Oriental Canouan and the Soho Beach Club at L’Ance Guyac sit within the same managed footprint. The southern half of the island remains residential — Charlestown, Friendship Bay, and the older fishing community.
The character of Canouan is unusual. It is small, expensive to reach, and almost entirely closed off from passing yacht traffic — the marina accepts only members and resort guests. The result is somewhere genuinely private, with the infrastructure of an upper-end resort destination and the discretion of a private island.
“Canouan has, in twenty years, become one of the most carefully managed destinations in the Caribbean — and it is precisely that quality of management that defines the place.”

When to go
Canouan operates on the standard Grenadines pattern. December through April is the high season — dry, breezy, and quietly busy. Easter is a peak; the summer months are warmer and quieter, with some hotel facilities operating reduced hours. The southern Grenadines sit at the edge of the hurricane belt and are typically less affected than the islands further north, though Beryl in 2024 was a reminder that direct strikes remain possible.

Getting there
Canouan Airport (CIW) was extended in 2018 and now accepts private jets up to Gulfstream G650 size, making it the most accessible of the smaller Grenadines for direct private aviation. There are no direct international scheduled flights; most guests connect via Barbados or fly in privately.
Private aviation
The island’s FBO at CIW handles private jet and turboprop arrivals — one of the most capable facilities in the southern Caribbean for private aviation. Direct arrivals from the US, UK, and Europe are routine for those positioning the right aircraft. Customs and immigration are processed on-site.
Scheduled airlines (via Barbados)
There are no direct international flights to Canouan. Mustique Airways and SVG Air operate scheduled connections from Barbados — a 75-minute flight in a Britten-Norman Islander or Twin Otter.
Yacht arrivals
Glossy Bay Marina is one of the finest deep-water marinas in the Eastern Caribbean, with berths for vessels up to 100 metres. Access is restricted to estate members and resort guests.
On Island
All Simply Islands villas include transfers. The estate operates a fleet of vehicles for residents and resort guests; the island is small enough that most movement is by golf cart or short transfer.
Things to do
Mustique is a place to be deliberately unhurried in. Most guests structure their days around the beaches, a lunch at the Beach Café or Basil’s, and an evening on the terrace at home. The island encourages staying still.
Godahl Beach is the most photographed — a long, gentle curve of white sand on the windward side of the estate. L’Ance Guyac, Mahault, and Carenage Bay are the others most guests work through. All are quietly populated at most; truly crowded never.
The Jim Fazio-designed course on the windward ridges is one of the most dramatic in the Caribbean, with sea views from every hole. Eighteen holes, championship layout, and almost no waiting at any tee.
Glossy Bay Marina is the centre of the estate. The yacht club restaurant, the bars, the boutique row, and the day trips out to the Tobago Cays all run through it. Membership and yacht-owner status determine access.
Day charters out to the Tobago Cays Marine Park — fifteen miles south through the lower Grenadines — are essential. Crewed yacht stays through the chain, taking in Mustique and Mayreau, are easily arranged.
The reefs around Canouan and the broader southern Grenadines are healthy and quiet. The dive operators based at the marina handle certifications and day trips out to the surrounding cays.
The Sandy Lane Yacht Club, Romeo at the Mandarin Oriental, and the Soho Beach Club represent the major dining options on the island. Charlestown has a small number of local restaurants for a slower lunch.
The Mandarin Oriental spa is the most comprehensive on the island. Yacht Club guests have access to a smaller facility within the marina precinct.
Charlestown, on the south-west of the island, has retained its fishing community and is the quiet counterpoint to the estate. A morning walk through the village before the day warms up is a standing pleasure of staying on the island.
Our Canouan portfolio sits within the Sandy Lane Yacht Club estate — a small, carefully curated set of villas with access to the marina, the golf course, and the major beaches. Each property has been visited and assessed by our team. Canouan stays are by their nature more managed than other Grenadines — full estate access is part of the offer.

A note from our team
Canouan is a small island, and the differences between villas are largely about position and pavilion configuration rather than the broader experience — every property comes with full estate access. We know which villas catch the best sunset, which sit closest to the marina, and which suit larger groups or families with younger children. Call us if you would like honest guidance.
